Explaining The Arizona Tax Credits

The state of Arizona sets annual limits for utilizing tax credits. There are two separate credits that Arizona taxpayers can take advantage of and it is important to understand them both.

  1. Tuition Tax Credit • Original

For the 2023 tax year, Arizona allows individual taxpayers an income tax credit up to $731 (single and head of household) or $1,459 (married filing jointly) for donations to a school tuition organization, such as Students First Foundation under the Original Individual Income Tax Credit.

  2. Tuition Tax Credit • PLUS/Overflow

In 2012, the Arizona legislature enacted a law allowing Arizona taxpayers who have maximized their annual donation for the original tax credit a second income tax credit. For tax year 2023, donations up to $728 (single and head of household) or $1,451 (married filing jointly) can be made to a school tuition organization, such as Students First Foundation, under the PLUS/Overflow Individual Income Tax Credit.

After calculating your state tax liability and choosing the amount you wish to donate, you can use the instructions below to make your contribution. To claim the credit against your state tax liability, remember to provide evidence of your donation along with the necessary forms (refer to the resources below). If you have any queries regarding how tax credits apply to your financial circumstances, it's best to consult your tax professional.

Can I choose who receives my donation?

Arizona law allows donors to recommend a student when donating; however, a recommendation is not a guarantee of a scholarship award. This is because Arizona law and ADOR regulations state that, "A school tuition organization cannot award, restrict, or reserve scholarships solely on the basis of a donor's recommendation." Recommendations are one of the three criteria our Selection Committees consider when making scholarship awards, in addition to the financial circumstances of the student's family (a required factor by state law) and the written narrative provided in the Scholarship Application.

A taxpayer may not claim a tax credit if the taxpayer agrees to swap donations with another taxpayer to benefit either taxpayer's own dependent (for example, swapping recommendations with another parent for each other's children is prohibited, even in groups of three or more). A taxpayer also may not recommend his/her own child or dependent.

When can I donate?

The deadline for filing your 2023 taxes is April 15, 2024. Make a donation to the Students First Foundation by that date and qualify for a dollar-for-dollar Arizona state tax credit on your 2023 taxes.
